Haysville Library History

The Haysville Community Library was established by referendum of the voters in April 1977. The Library Board was appointed by the mayor and approved by the City Council. Board members were: Ruth Barnett, Phil Bentley, Dorothy Holt, Betty Nutter, Larry Rickets, Cindy Taylor and Gary Sutton. Betty Cattrell was named the Director in June 1977. She was the only staff member at that time. The Hemphill School building, built in 1948, was leased from the school district for $10.00 per year. Limited funds were available to purchase materials for the Library. Donations from citizen's private collections helped the Library to open. In 1978, the Library became part of the Kansas Library System.

Haysville Community Library moved into a new 10,000 square foot building in 1993. On May 3, 1999, the building was partially destroyed by a tornado. The Library operated out of homes and Rex Elementary School for five months. Regular operations were resumed in October 1999 and the addition was finished at that time.

The Library's collection has grown from nothing to over 50,000 items. We celebrated our 25th Anniversary November 1, 2002. As of 2007, the Haysville Community Library is a Level II Service Center, serving the approximately 10,000 citizens of Haysville. Thirty-eight of those citizens have served as Board trustees.

In July 2009, we reopened in our new building located at 210 S Hays in Haysville's Historic District.

It is our mission as a tax-supported community resource, to provide informational, educational, and recreational services, materials and programs to users of all ages.
